Artificial intelligence has captured learning designers' attention, prompted by its potential for automated essay scoring and, more recently, for essay writing. This presentation is on a different kind of AI and different uses: It is about knowledge- or meaning-based AI rather than data-based AI. After describing this difference between Knowledge Technologies (KTs) and Machine Learning, Peter will briefly explain how KTs have been used in (formal) education and e-learning. Next, two examples of how students can use KTs will be provided, illustrating two emerging patterns for KT-based assignments. Finally, Peter will discuss the potential of KTs for managing design knowledge and supporting learning designers in their work.
