AI for learning design: Knowledge technologies in the hands of students and learning designers

Online

Artificial intelligence has captured learning designers' attention, prompted by its potential for automated essay scoring and, more recently, for essay writing. This presentation is on a different kind of AI and different uses: It is about knowledge- or meaning-based AI rather than data-based AI. After describing this difference between Knowledge Technologies (KTs) and Machine Learning, Peter will briefly explain how KTs have been used in (formal) education and e-learning. Next, two examples of how students can use KTs will be provided, illustrating two emerging patterns for KT-based assignments. Finally, Peter will discuss the potential of KTs for managing design knowledge and supporting learning designers in their work.
