AI for learning design: Knowledge technologies in the hands of students and learning designers

19 May 2023 @ 12:00 pm - 1:00 pm AEST

Date: 19th May 2023

Artificial intelligence has captured learning designers’ attention, prompted by its potential for automated essay scoring and, more recently, for essay writing. This presentation is on a different kind of AI and different uses: It is about knowledge- or meaning-based AI rather than data-based AI. After describing this difference between Knowledge Technologies (KTs) and Machine Learning, I’ll briefly explain how KTs have been used in (formal) education and e-learning. Next, two examples of how students can use KTs will be provided, illustrating two emerging patterns for KT-based assignments. Finally, I’ll discuss the potential of KTs for managing design knowledge and supporting learning designers in their work.

Speaker: Professor Peter Reimann
Peter Reimann is Professor in the Sydney University School of Education and Social Work. His research encompasses educational computing, knowledge-based learning environments, e-learning, evaluation and assessment in computer-based technologies, and research methodology. He has experience in design and evaluation of hypermedia systems, simulations environments and intelligent tutors for teaching and training, and in the evaluation of multimedia authoring programs. Peter is also a founding member of Cool Futures, a consortium of educators innovating sustainability education in Australia.
