SUMMARY:How do students learn and retain new information?
DESCRIPTION:The second webinar in our new series on “How learning science can inform learning analytics” will be presented by Dr Tanya Evans – Senior Lecturer in Mathematics at the University of Auckland and Head of the Mathematics Education Unit. \nOur understanding of the mechanisms involved in how students learn and retain new information has advanced substantially over the last five decades by employing mathematical modelling and experiential testing of those models. In this talk\, I will demonstrate how I have used the latest research in this space in my practice to improve student learning\, and how data can help us to address some of the main debates taking place in this research sphere relating to Higher Education. \nRegistration: Register to attend the webinar here.

SUMMARY:AI for learning design: Knowledge technologies in the hands of students and learning designers
DESCRIPTION:Date: 19th May 2023\nTime: 12pm AEST\nHow to join: https://une-au.zoom.us/j/86784855846 \nArtificial intelligence has captured learning designers’ attention\, prompted by its potential for automated essay scoring and\, more recently\, for essay writing. This presentation is on a different kind of AI and different uses: It is about knowledge- or meaning-based AI rather than data-based AI. After describing this difference between Knowledge Technologies (KTs) and Machine Learning\, I’ll briefly explain how KTs have been used in (formal) education and e-learning. Next\, two examples of how students can use KTs will be provided\, illustrating two emerging patterns for KT-based assignments. Finally\, I’ll discuss the potential of KTs for managing design knowledge and supporting learning designers in their work. \nSpeaker: Professor Peter Reimann\nPeter Reimann is Professor in the Sydney University School of Education and Social Work. His research encompasses educational computing\, knowledge-based learning environments\, e-learning\, evaluation and assessment in computer-based technologies\, and research methodology. He has experience in design and evaluation of hypermedia systems\, simulations environments and intelligent tutors for teaching and training\, and in the evaluation of multimedia authoring programs. Peter is also a founding member of Cool Futures\, a consortium of educators innovating sustainability education in Australia. \n

SUMMARY:The value of recognition programs: The new PSF and beyond
DESCRIPTION:The TELedvisors SIG is delighted to present this webinar on the value of recognition programs. In this webinar Professor Abby Cathcart (QUT) will outline the changes to the Professional Standards Framework (PSF) which will come into effect in 2023. The PSF has been widely used in Australia as part of academic and professional development in learning and teaching\, and we explore how useful it is as part of career development in the ‘third space’ and what the impact of the changes might be. \nIn the second part of the webinar\, we will facilitate an open discussion about accreditation and recognition programs. If we were to develop one from scratch for TELedvisors\, what would it need to include and what would it look like? How would it ensure that experience and capabilities are recognised and how could it form the basis of career progression? \nAbout our speaker: \nProfessor Abby Cathcart is the Director of Student Success and the QUT Academy of Learning and Teaching (QALT)\, a portfolio which includes evaluations\, the Higher Education Research Network\, Retention\, Language\, Learning and STEM support\, Expert Peer Review of Educational Practice\, Awards and Grants\, Careers and Employability\, Professional learning\, and recognition as HEA fellows. Abby is a Principal Fellow of the HEA and leads the AdvanceHE Australasian Accredited Leaders Network. Since 2014 more than 1200 QUT staff members have successfully been recognised as HEA Fellows. She co-designed and co-leads the Indigenous Perspectives in Learning and Teaching module for staff (with the QUT Carumba Institute) and developed the innovative specialist award Associate Fellow (Indigenous) of the HEA\, which was accredited by AdvanceHE in 2019.  Abby has worked with Universities across the world to promote teaching quality\, develop academic governance structures\, and build professional recognition schemes. \nhttps://www.qut.edu.au/about/our-people/academic-profiles/abby.cathcart \nRegister here
