Learning Centered Analytics Special Event Workshop – Mission Possbile
– Are we getting impact with learning analytics?
– What insights are learning analytics giving us about learning?
– How does learning design inform how we interpret LA?
The ASCILITE Learning Analytics Special Interest Group invite you to a national workshop exploring the impact of learning analytics in higher education and how learning is framed within learning analytics practice.
The theme of the workshop brings together two dominant and critical conversations in learning analytics in the Australian context. The first is how we understand and operationalise learning within learning analytics practice and respond to concern that LA can sometimes privilege a limited framing of learning. The second responds to perceptions that LA has perhaps not delivered the impact on learning, teaching and student success outcomes that many in the sector were expecting. But how do we define ‘impact’? And how can we ‘see’ impact?
In response we will explore powerful exemplars that are emerging in both research and professional practice of learning analytics that afford insight not just into learning behaviours, but other learning processes, and the contexts in which learning is situated.
The workshop will feature a range of Australian speakers who will provide insights and examples of how learning and impact can be conceptualised and operationalised and will link to a series of webinars in the subsequent four weeks on the same theme featuring international speakers.

The workshop will be held concurrently in Brisbane, Sydney and Melbourne with live streaming of presentations across the three venues, interspersed with small group activities and discussions at each venue.

ASCILITE OEP Special Interest Group webinar on Scaling Online Education
On 24 September rom 3.00-4.00pm (AEST), the ASCILITE OEP Special Interest Group is hosting a webinar focused on scaling online education to be presented by Associate Professor Jay Cohen (Transform Online Learning, Charles Sturt University).
As every university focuses on quality assurance and quality control in online learning and teaching, scalability inevitably becomes a challenge, as does the complexity of undertaking course/unit review and redevelopment. Engaging appropriately with academic staff, building assets for reusability, developing core competencies and confidence, and constructing learning experiences on the foundation of previous work are all considerations. Learning design in an online environment is largely geared towards student retention and student engagement and above all, the pedagogical organisation of learning material and learning activities so that learning might more easily occur.
This webinar details how Charles Sturt University’s Transforming Online Learning (TOL) project has incorporated an agile approach to online subject development so that learning design for an online cohort of students can occur at scale, by presenting the experience of a pilot within the Business Faculty.Agile is an iterative approach to project management that, in this instance has afforded learning designers the opportunity to develop online learning subjects at scale more quickly quicker and with fewer errors.
The webinar will illustrate and consider the challenges of bringing faculty on board, scaling resources and approaches, and the implications for broader practice.

Nominations will be open until 1 October 2019 and winners will be announced at the ASCILITE 2019 Conference. The five award categories available to members are as follows:

ICDE World Conference on Online Learning
The ICDE World Conference on Online Learning takes place in Dublin from 3-7 November 2019. With over 600 paper submissions and delegates already registered from over 50 countries, Dublin is the place to be later in the year if you want to really shape the global future of online education. There is still time to contribute a late paper to this event, including submission of virtual papers, but you will have to be quick!
