New TELall Blog: Putting the pedagogic horse in front of the technology cart
In our latest blog post, Michael Sankey (Learning Futures, Griffith University) begins his fascinating blog from the position of being a senior lecturer; “Typically, I teach the way I was taught, and all seems fine to me, and most of my students seem to be doing OK. But I’m being asked to move more of my teaching online and I keep hearing from others in my faculty that we need to be considering things like ‘constructive alignment’ (whatever that means). Then, if I want to apply for promotion at some point in the future I need to be conscious and explicit about my teaching/pedagogical approach (whatever that means) particularly as I move to a more blended mode of delivery”.
Invitation to attend the LA-SIG’s first webinar of 2019, 1 May 2019
This webinar was originally scheduled for 12 April but has since been rescheduled to 1 May 2019.
The Learning Analytics SIG will be conducting its first webinar of the year on the ideas discussed in the blog above and how the field of learning analytics has developed over the years. Future directions and challenges will be addressed by the session’s presenter, Dr Cassandra Colvin from Charles Sturt University. Cassandra will overview the field of learning analytics, chronicling its development to date, and, through a series of provocations, challenge us to (re-) consider its future possibilities, particularly in light of our own professional contexts and disciplinary knowledge.
The webinar will take place on Wednesday 1 May at 11am AEST and you can register for this event here. You will then receive an email with the session logon. Pre-registration will also allow us to send you a brief reminder prior to the event.

2019 ACODE Learning Technologies Leadership Institute
The Learning Technologies Leadership Institute is a highly engaging and practical professional development program designed for participants to develop a deep understanding of effective leadership in relation to technology enhanced learning in the tertiary education context. The Institute runs every two years.
Participants work together to gain an understanding of leadership skills and strategies and to develop their own leadership potential in a collaborative and supportive environment. Participants also apply their knowledge and learning to case studies focused on approaches to leading the introduction and use of learning technologies considering both New Zealand and Australian tertiary educational settings.
ACODE LTLI will be held on 18 – 22 August 2019 in Mooloolaba, Queensland. For further information and to register please go here.
New discussion paper on the ethics of learning analytics in Australian higher education
A group of academics from across Australia have published a discussion paper on the ethics of learning analytics in Australian higher education. The authors include: A/Prof Linda Corrin (Swinburne), Prof Gregor Kennedy (UniMelb), Dr Sarah French (UniMelb), Prof Simon Buckingham Shum (UTS), Dr Kirsty Kitto (UTS), Prof Abelardo Pardo (UniSA), Prof Deborah West (Flinders), Dr Negin Mirriahi (UniSA) and Dr Cassandra Colvin (CSU).
The paper was written to progress the conversation about the ethics of learning analytics within the Australian higher education context – as we are aware that many institutions and practitioners are still struggling with some of these issues. We see this as the first step in a broader conversation across the sector around the principles highlighted in this document – including the potential for cross-institutional research going forward.

HERSDA annual conference, Auckland 2 – 5 July 2019
HERDSA is holding its annual conference 2 – 5 July 2019 (with pre-conference workshops on 2 July) at the Science Centre, University of Auckland, New Zealand and the planning committee invites you to join it for the 42nd annual conference of the Higher Education Research and Development Society of Australasia (HERDSA).
The theme for the conference is Next Generation, Higher Education: Challenges, Changes and Opportunities. In the last decade, Higher Education has undergone dramatic changes with internationalisation bringing a broader range of students to tertiary institutions, while requiring researchers to focus on priorities set by government. The sector continues to grapple with restrained budgets, increased student numbers, greater student diversity and government agendas requiring preparation of students for work and lifelong learning. In addition, the research environment has become more complex with funding opportunities becoming more competitive but not as plentiful.

12th annual International Conference of Education, Research and Innovation (ICERI2019)
The ICERI2019 conference will be held on the 11 – 13 November 2019 in Seville (Spain) and ASCILITE members are invited to submit abstract submissions with a due date of 11 July 2019. Abstracts should be submitted online here.
After 12 years, ICERI has become an annual meeting point for lecturers, researchers, professors, educational scientists and technologists. Every year, ICERI brings together over 700 delegates from 80 different countries. It will provide the ideal opportunity to present your projects and experiences to an international audience. Also, it will offer participants an overview of the current situation of education and new learning technologies.
ICERI2019 Proceedings will be reviewed for their inclusion in the ISI CPCI (Web of Science). Previous editions are already indexed. Also, a DOI number will be assigned to each accepted paper.
28th EDEN Annual Conference: PhD Symposium submissions remain open
EDEN’s annual conference (European Distance & eLearning Network) takes place in Bruges, Belgium 16 – 19 June 2019 and invitations are open to submit to the pre-conference PhD Symposium co-organized by VIVES, KU Leuven and EDEN. PhD students are encouraged to submit their ongoing research related to the broad area of the conference’s theme: “Connecting Through Educational Technology – To Produce Effective Learning Environments”.
The Symposium Committee is chaired by Josep M Duart, EDEN Vice-president for research, Universitat Oberta de Catalunya, Spain. The Symposium will be supported by a panel of international scholars of education and by the community of EDEN Fellows. Further information about the symposium is available online.
Registration for the conference is open here. The registration fee includes access to all conference facilities, the electronic Conference Proceedings, the Welcome Cocktail, lunches and refreshments during the conference days. The fee does not include accommodation and the conference dinner. For young scholars, a special discount will be applied.
2019 biennial national conference for the Association for Academic Literacy and Learning
The conference welcomes educators, researchers, advisers, learning designers and managers who work in post-secondary education contexts to improve the teaching, learning and development of students’ communication skills, academic language and literacy, numeracy and English language for academic and professional purposes.
The AALL conference will be held in Fremantle, WA, from 27 – 29 November 2019. The theme of this upcoming conference is (A) ALL AROUND THE WORLD: International Perspectives, Research and Practice in Academic Language and Learning.
