Working in the third space is rewarding, challenging and often difficult to explain. Many of the most important lessons are not learned through formal induction or professional development. They are learned through experience, through relationships, and through working across academic, professional and institutional boundaries.
What do you wish someone had told you when you first started?
Join the TELedvisors community for an interactive conversation about the realities of third-space practice. Through personal stories, live polling and community discussion, we will explore the experiences, challenges and unwritten lessons that shape our work but are rarely discussed openly.
The conversation begins with two different perspectives. Aylwin Sim reflects on his experience of entering the third space within the past five years, while Carrol Besseling shares what years of working across curriculum, educational technology and academic development have taught her. Together, their stories will spark a broader conversation about how third-space identity develops over time.
Whether you are just beginning your journey or have worked in the third space for many years, your experiences will help shape the discussion.

This session will be hosted by Diana Turnip, an educational developer from UNSW
Diana Saragi Turnip is an Educational Developer in the Nexus Program at UNSW’s Faculty of Medicine & Health. Working in the third space between institutional strategy and academic practice, she supports program-level curriculum and assessment transformation through evidence-informed design. Her interests include program-level assessment, programmatic assessment for learning, competency-based education, third space practice, and the scholarship of teaching and learning.
Carrol Besseling is an education professional at UNSW Business School whose work spans curriculum design, educational technology, and academic development. Bridging academic and professional practice, she collaborates with educators to enhance teaching, learning, and staff capability through evidence-informed approaches. Her interests include technology-enhanced learning, student wellbeing, equity, inclusion, and accessible higher education.
Aylwin Sim is an Educational Developer in the Nexus Program, Faculty of Medicine & Health at UNSW Sydney. He works at the intersection of education and technology, supporting educators to translate pedagogy into practice. His work includes AI-enhanced learning, virtual patient platforms, and leading the award-winning OpenBook project to create inclusive online learning grounded in Universal Design for Learning (UDL).
