Nominations will be open until 1 October 2019 and winners will be announced at the ASCILITE 2019 Conference. The five award categories available to members are as follows:

Open Educational Practice SIG webinar: Scaling Online Education

Abstract: As every university focuses on quality assurance and quality control in online learning and teaching, scalability inevitably becomes a challenge, as does the complexity of undertaking course/unit review and redevelopment. Engaging appropriately with academic staff, building assets for reusability, developing core competencies and confidence, and constructing learning experiences on the foundation of previous work are all considerations. Learning design in an online environment is largely geared towards student retention and student engagement and above all, the pedagogical organisation of learning material and learning activities so that learning might more easily occur.
This webinar details how Charles Sturt University’s Transforming Online Learning (TOL) project has incorporated an agile approach to online subject development so that learning design for an online cohort of students can occur at scale, by presenting the experience of a pilot within the Business Faculty.Agile is an iterative approach to project management that, in this instance has afforded learning designers the opportunity to develop online learning subjects at scale more quickly quicker and with fewer errors.
The webinar will illustrate and consider the challenges of bringing faculty on board, scaling resources and approaches, and the implications for broader practice.
Presenter: Jay Cohen is an Associate Professor Transform Online Learning at Charles Sturt University who is passionate and innovative online learning professional with a highly regarded record in the delivery of high quality, scalable learning solutions across the higher education sector. He has over 20 years experience in tertiary and online education, as well as extensive people, project and process management experience. Jay is currently employed as the Director of Online Subject Development at Charles Sturt University where he is responsible for leading the Transforming Online Learning project across the university. The Director of Online Subject Development manages the on-line subject development, including digital technologists, learning designers, learning analysts, library staff and editors. He also works closely with each Faculty Leadership Team. This role requires leadership in online subject design and development and the associated workflows and management processes enabling a large scale roll-out.

Next webinar: Are typed and handwritten exams equivalent?
The next webinar “Are typed and handwritten exams equivalent?” is scheduled for 2 Oct 2019. In moving from handwritten to typed essay-based exams, the salient issue from an academic perspective is equivalence. Taking evidence from the research literature as its starting-point, this seminar explores whether the cognitive processes in, and intellectual outputs of, typed exams can be considered equivalent to those of handwritten exams. If they are not equivalent, what are the implications for the future of exams in tertiary education? This session will be presented by Elizabeth (Liz) Masterman (University of Oxford, UK). Session recording: A shift from discouraging dishonesty to authentic assessment. 7 Aug 2019
This webinar discussed aspects of traditional forms of assessment that are particularly susceptible to contract cheating in both face-to-face and online environments. It was argued that these traditional assessment formats are neither valid nor reliable as measures of achievement of workplace-focused learning outcomes. A number of alternative forms of assessment were suggested. Job Vacancy: Senior Tutor – Learning Design, Centre for Tertiary Teaching & Learning (CeTTL), University of Waikato, Hamilton, New Zealand
CeTTL is seeking a Senior Tutor – Learning Design to provide curricular advice and support to staff to design and develop pedagogically appropriate programmes, papers, activities and content. This position will also contribute to the design and teaching of generic and subject-specific tertiary teaching development and induction workshops for academic staff in a variety of instructional modes.
The Senior Tutor may contribute to the teaching of papers in CeTTL’s Postgraduate Certificate of Tertiary Teaching and Learning. The successful candidate will have completed a relevant postgraduate qualification, have excellent interpersonal and written communication skills, knowledge of academic literacy principles and practices, curriculum development skills, and teaching experience in a tertiary or adult education context.
