2017 ASCILITE Community Mentoring Program: Information Session Webinar
Abstract
The ASCILITE Community Mentoring Program (CMP) has been in operation since 2003 with over 100 members having taken part to date. The program now provides mentoring opportunities across a number of fields including technical, academic development, learning development, faculty academics and early career researchers, graphic designers, and programmers.
The CMP seeks to involve participants in a professional mentoring relationship built between learners (mentees) and experienced practitioners (mentors). While new learners may be experienced in some areas of educational technologies, the ASCILITE CMP is a vehicle for the enhancement of specific knowledge, skills or capacities in an area of developing expertise.
This 40 minute webinar aims to provide an understanding of how the CMP works and how it can benefit both mentors and mentees.
Presenter
Helen Farley is an Associate Professor at the Digital Life Lab at the University of Southern Queensland. Helen is the current chair of the ASCILITE Community Mentoring Program. She is leading the Australian government-funded, $4.4 million Making the Connection project which is taking digital technologies into prisons to provide access to higher education. The project was recently awarded a prestigious Australian Award for University Teaching. Her research interests include digital equity, mobile learning and immersive virtual world environments.

Over the next few weeks, we will be highlighting ASCILITE's Community Mentoring Program (CMP) not only through this latest blog post but also through a CMP information session webinar to be held on 13 February (see above). The latest blog post covers Helen Farley's reflections as both a CMP mentor and mentee. Helen recently took over as Chair of the CMP from Sue Gregory, ASCILITE Vice President.

Reminder: AJET Volume 32, Special Issue No. 6 (2016) Published
The Australasian Journal of Educational Technology Volume 32 Special issue 6 (2016) on Brain, Mind & Educational Technology has now been published.
Abstract
The emergence and growth of research in cognitive neuroscience over recent decades has led to important discoveries about how the brain and mind work. These discoveries have potential implications for the use of educational technologies and provide insight into possibilities for improving student learning in digital environments. Despite the promise of the emerging field of educational neuroscience, it is difficult to translate findings from the laboratory to the physical or virtual classroom. The articles in this special issue of AJET are attempts to bridge this gap. We hope that this special issue will serve as a catalyst for further work on the translation of foundational research on the brain and mind to learning design and teaching with educational technologies.

ASCILITE Welcomes New Co-opted member on the Executive Committee
The ASCILITE Executive Committee often co-opts one or two additional committee members to assist in special projects and the work of the Executive. For the upcoming year, the Executive considered offering a co-opted position to Mark Shier, Senior Lecturer in Physiology at the Swinburne University of Technology. Mark stood for election on the committee in November 2016 and narrowly missed out. He subsequently accepted the offer to serve on the committee as a co-opted member and the Executive is excited to have him on the team. Co-opted members server for a one year term.
Mark is an educator with many years of experience and his educational research interests are around adapting technology to promote and improve student learning and engagement. He holds a Grad Cert in Learning and Teaching and won an ALTC citation for contributions to student learning in 2009. He has a PhD in Neuroscience, and his current discipline research interests are in the area of human sensory system measurements. This provides some challenges to adapting technological tools, but the possibilities are huge.
Mark has been an ASCILITE member since 2005 and tries to attend as many of the annual conferences as possible. He was an ASCILITE CMP mentee in 2007.
