TELedvisors May Webinar: How to influence as Third Space Practitioners

Date: Thursday 1 May 2025
Time: 12:00 pm – 1:00 pm AEST
Register and join the webinar here

Third space practitioners in the higher education sector often navigate complex collaboration challenges when driving change projects.  We often work without formal authority, making it difficult to lead initiatives. We must build informal leadership skills and foster relationships across various faculties and divisional units.

Effective collaboration is crucial, yet it can be hindered by differing priorities, communication barriers, and resistance to change. Despite these, we play a vital role in advocating for and implementing innovative solutions that enhance educational experiences and drive digital transformation within universities.

Join us to explore these challenges and hear tips for working with multiple stakeholders to enhance the student experience.

Speakers: Dr Gavin Beck, Manager (University of Technology Sydney) and Professor Julie Robert, Dean (Griffith University)

ASCILITE May Webinar: Adding Insult to Injustice: How Justice Perceptions and Social Media Shape Vengeful Dissent in Online and On-Campus Education

Date: Thursday 22 May 2025
Time: 11:00 am (AEDT)

Ever received an angry email from a student? Online education is booming, but it comes with unique challenges—one of which is the reported greater volatility of students studying one. In this webinar, Dr Lauren Shaw (James Cook University) explores findings from Adding Insult to Injustice, a study examining how perceptions of fairness (procedural justice) and the use of student-led social media groups influence vengeful dissent in both online and on-campus higher education. Join us to unpack the implications of this research and discuss strategies to better support online student engagement while protecting staff wellbeing.

Conferences provide a forum for the presentation of refereed papers, short concise papers, symposiums, posters, pecha kucha and workshops. The conference also provides memorable opportunities for social interaction and networking.

If you would like to discuss hosting the conference with a member of the executive please reach out to Sandra Barker or Hazel Jones.

Call for participants: Research into online engagement strategies

To all experienced online teachers and engagement experts in Higher Education, Alice Brown (University of Southern Queensland) is currently seeking your assistance in a research project (HERDSA grant 2024) to investigate students’ perceptions of their most valued course (subject) specific online engagement strategies. These are strategies that teachers include as part of their online learning environment to support student learning (such as discussion forums; social forums and introductions; Padlets, eBooks, online tutorials, team activities, badges, personal communications, weekly announcements and nudges, collaborative/peer activities and opportunities to learn with others, short recordings and digital media and videos, stop and think activities, online whiteboard, guest speakers, providing explicit expectations about learning and ways of working, …..and many more).

If you are a strong online teacher or know of an uber teacher who strongly engages students online, then please contact Alice. The research team are eager to hear from your students about their experiences of online engagement in your course. The team are interested in learning more about the strategies your students found useful in helping them feel part of the subject.

For further information please email Alice Brown.
