EdTech'98 and ACEC'98 Virtual Conference Conference Guide This page describes conference activities, explains how you can register and get started, describes the kinds of contributions you can make, and links to advice about video conferencing.

Equipment and software	If you are reading this web page, you have the required equipment, software and Internet access! Netscape 3 or Internet Explorer 3 or later (though Netscape 2 for Windows or Netscape 1.1 or 2 for Macintosh will suffice). However, if you wish to participate in Internet based video conferencing sessions, please see separate advice on what's needed for video conferencing.
What are the activities?	Firstly, about the conference papers. As in a face to face conference, you will select the topics which interest you most, and "attend" by reading articles online (you will have to be selective, there are about 150 articles) and participate by asking questions or giving comments via web based discussion groups or listserver email lists. These are "asynchronous" activities, that is you do your reading of articles and the discussion threads for them, and give your own questions and comments, whenever you are online. Then when you are next online, perhaps a few hours or up to several days later, look again for follow up on the web based discussion threads or from our email lists. Secondly, about Internet based video conferencing. This is our only "real time" or "synchronous" activity, that is you have to be at your workstation, in front of camera and microphone, at the same time as other participants. Please see separate advice on what's needed for video conferencing. Note that you don't have to be equipped for transmission (camera, microphone, hardware accessories, etc) if all you wish to do is "look and listen". Advice is given separately about the video conferencing schedule of times.
What's the timing?	The planned duration for the virtual conference is 4 weeks, from Monday 22 June to Friday 17 July 1998, ie for the two weeks prior to the face to face conferences, the EdTech'98 and ACEC'98 conferences week, and one week after. You are asked to plan for a good level of Internet access during the virtual conference period (actually, just like a face to face conference, you can "snooze" for most of the time, if you must).
How do I start?	You have to be registered in order to obtain a login name and password for access to the conference's participants only pages. Please go to Conference Registration Fees which describes a modest registration charge (we have to cover some expenses!). Our Registration Form is online and contains a number of options for paying. For conference type, select "virtual". In the case of persons registered for and attending ACEC'98 in Adelaide, registration is not required because ACEC'98 organisers will give you a login name and password valid for the period 5-8 July. You can register anytime via Registration Form before or during the virtual conference period, but you will not receive your email containing your login name and password until after registration, and after the commencement date 22 June.
After registration?	After registration, you will receive the login name and password you need for accessing the conference only web pages, plus URLs for the virtual conference Help page and other pages. Your login name and password are issued only via email, either individually or via the virtual conference's Bulletins list, vconf98-bulletin@cleo.murdoch.edu.au [see Help for details], to which all registrants will be subscribed automatically (it's a relatively low volume list, other channels will carry the main discussions). For registrations after 22 June, it's a good idea to check the vconf98-bulletin archives for important bulletins about conference activities.
What do I do first?	Check through the main topic areas which are of most interest to you, via Virtual Conference Home. There's another path via Proceedings Full Contents. Who's participating?	To find out who is registered, check via the password controlled pages for Registrants and list archives.
Can I submit an article?	Yes, there is scope. After all, this is the age of "just in time" publishing via the web, isn't it? If you feel that you have an article worth adding to the conference website, and that you haven't obtained or may not obtain a sufficient say via email lists and web based discussion groups, please read Call for papers and follow that procedure. Short articles preferred, 1000-2000 words with judicious selection of graphics and URLs. Of course submission in html is preferred, for greater speed, and the editorial review process will be much abbreviated, also for speed reasons. No guarantees as to whether our speed will be sufficient! Authors electing to submit in html as per Submission guidelines are invited to take a copy of the EdTech'98 articles template. The principal reviewing will be by conference participants, if your article arouses their interest!
