ASCILITE 2004 Workshop

Online teaching at QUT: Insights into institutional approaches, systems and reviews

Halima Goss, Ross Daniels and Bob Boyd
Queensland University of Technology

Objectives This full day workshop is designed to enable participants to explore the approach to online learning and teaching at QUT from policy, practice and quality assurance perspectives. Specifically, participants will:
  • gain hands on experience of the OLT environment - an alternative to the popular WebCT and Blackboard portals
  • walk through the staff development programs and explore resources and approaches taken to staff development
  • experience an OLT learning environment from the point of view of a student
  • examine the process and outcomes of the thematic review of online teaching conducted at QUT in 2003 and explore the recommendations in relation to their own contexts

Intended audience Attendees will be individuals with an interest in exploring the QUT Online Learning and Teaching (OLT) systems and strategies in order to gain insights into the approach taken to foster institutional commitment for the integration of technology in learning and teaching. This is a workshop designed for coordinators and administrators with responsibility for organisational area or institutional development in relation to educational technology integration into the learning environment.

Facilitators Ms Halima Goss is Associate Director, TALSS, University Online Teaching Coordinator, and Manager - Software, Multimedia and Internet Learning Environments (SMILE) and Hub sections of TALSS. Mr Ross Daniels, a lecturer and unit coordinator, School of Humanities and Human Services, is Chair of Review panel for "Online teaching at QUT", 2003. Mr Bob Boyd is a lecturer and Director of Practicum Studies, in the School of Human Movement Studies.

Details of activities The workshop has been designed to provide participants with an insight into the policies, systems and developments in online teaching at QUT. Participants will examine and utilise the technology that has been developed at QUT and adopted across the institution. The hands on activities will enable a review from both a staff and student perspective and the final discussion will explore the thematic review of online teaching at QUT as both a process and a guide to the future developments.

The Whatif journal is perpetuated throughout the day through a series of reflective prompts and will serve to initiate future thinking in relation to systems, policies, practices and reviews. It is intended that the collated thoughts be distributed to ASCILITE 04 workshop attendees to use in their own institutions to foster further thinking about online teaching.
