Originally the Jubilee Theatre, and more recently the Adelphi Theatre, The San Remo Ballroom was roofed and totally encased with corrugated iron. When known as the Jubilee, it had a special soundproof room with a wall facing the screen made from sheets of glass which was used for nursing infants.
In around 1900 Mr Thomas Pratt and George Brownhill were proprietors.
Then Biers, proprietors of the Village Belle (St Kilda Rink) took over,
and later the Roberts Furniture Co. came in, before moving to Smith Street Collingwood.
The Jubliee was vacant for some time before being taken over by Carden
and Brown. The building was later rennovated and named Adelphi.
Carmello Vitale continued with the Adelphi for 18 months, then remodelled
it, until in 1963 it became known as the San Remo Ballroom. Today
Carmello Vitale is still the owner, with managers Simon Gerali, Paul
Mazzetti and Julio Marani.
