Advanced Telecom Network Services such as ISDN and broadband technologies provide ideal infrastructure for the support of multimedia.Multimedia databases development is being driven by new technology such as the optical disc technology. Advanced Telecom public network services allow the benefits of database centralisation to be achieved via the ability to offer cost effective remote networking and access.
At present, the full potential of the advent of the CD-ROM allowing storage of text, data, sound and images on a single disk is limited by existing transport network capabilities. For example the speed of sending video data to the computer is limited by the low bandwidth of existing transmission technologies. Telecom network services can provide high speed, high bandwidth capabilities to alleviate this problem and provide for better resolution quality in a switched, on demand environment.
The paper highlights a few interesting multimedia application including telemedicine, telelibrary, telepolicing and telepresentation.
