The Australian Society for Educational Technology Ltd (ASET) is the
national organisation for people with professional interests in Educational

What is Educational Technology?
Educational Technology is defined by ASET as the design, development,
implementation and evaluation of systems, methods and materials to achieve
effective outcomes and improve the process of human learning.
The objects of the Society are:
- To foster thought, theory, research and standards
of practice in the field of educational technology.
- To provide leadership in promoting the principles
and practices of educational technology, its application and outcomes
in various educational and training environments.
- To provide for a fellowship of persons with
interests in educational technology and a forum to exchange, question
and promote ideas or practices within the field of educational technology.
- To act as a clearing house for the collection
and dissemination of information, ideas and research into educational
technology.
- To support the publication of materials.
- To co-operate with international, interstate
and local bodies with similar objects to those of the Society.
History
ASET was founded in April 1975 in Adelaide and has grown to become
a national organisation with chapters in Victoria, New South Wales,
South Australia and Western Australia. There are also many members in
other states and overseas.
Benefits of ASET membership
ASET offers its members the opportunity to enhance their development
through interaction with other professionals. It facilitates this by
conducting regular activities, EdTech conferences, the emailing list
edtech-aus, workshops, discussions and meetings, providing assistance
and advice and publishing a website, as well as the Australian Journal
of Educational Technology, published biennually. ASET also conducts
the ASET Awards.
Members
Members of the society include lecturers and teachers, media personnel,
librarians, audio-visual technicians and producers, students, instructional
designers, staff development personnel, industrial and commercial training
officers, multimedia developers, companies supplying hardware and software
services to education and others with interests in various aspects of
educational technology.
Membership Entitlements
ASET aims to cater for the interests of its members by providing a
forum for discussion on educational technology issues, providing a variety
of professional development opportunities and by co-operating with other
professional organisations in related fields. Members receive:
- The Australian Journal of Educational Technology
(AJET) twice a year. AJET includes refereed items and papers covering
the application, policy and theory of educational technology. The
journal also highlights issues that can be shared among colleagues
to increase their understanding of how communications and information
technologies can be used in learning. AJET is available online and
in major research libraries across Australia.
- Access to ASET's Members Only web pages, including
a Directory of Members, and the Members Only email list asetmembers.
- Reduced registration fee for the biennial ASET
EdTech Conference that alternates between states, and reduced entry
fee for the ASET Awards conducted biennially.
- Access to information including fliers and
newsletters distributed by local chapters, and participation in
local chapter activities often at reduced or no cost.
Membership Categories
Current rates for subscriptions are listed on our Membership Application
Form.
- Individual Member. Any person who pays the
prescribed individual membership fee.
- Corporate or Institutional Member. The Corporate
or Institutional member will be entitled to nominate five representatives
for a reduced individual membership fee. The corporation or institution
may nominate additional representatives at four-fifths the individual
membership.
- Patron. Any individual or organisation that
elects to support the Society and its objectives, by a significant
annual contribution. Patrons will be given due recognition by the
Society.
- Student Member. Any person who is a registered
student, not in full-time employment and who pays the prescribed
student membership fee. The student membership fee would normally
be two-thirds the prescribed individual membership fee.
- Honorary Life Member. Members who have given
outstanding service to the Society may be elected as Honorary Life
Members.
