Publishing multimedia for the corporate training market

John Catlin
Tarragon Training International, New South Wales
Why publish corporate training products? This presentation discusses some opportunities and development strengths in the Australasian region. Opportunities have been created by the global demand for multimedia products, the presence of new markets with no dominant suppliers, international standardisations, local demand for products and the availability of multimedia capable computers. Particular strengths in Australasia include innovative and early implementations of multimedia, close relationships between suppliers and users, and incentives for research, development and export. We are in a multicultural region, our workforce is highly educated, and a depth of instructional, creative and subject matter expertise is available.

Applied Learning has been selling, marketing and distributing technology based training products for twenty years, and in the past eight years has undertaken 150,000 hours of courseware development. Products for overseas distribution have been developed with Telecom, Mincom, Smith's Snackfood Company, Comalco and CAA. Tarragon Training International is Applied Learning's multimedia courseware publishing division, with a development facility in Sydney.

Issues discussed in this presentation include copyright, ensuring a correct cultural and gender mix, appropriate instructional use of the technology, recognition of current platform limitations and licensing and distribution. Developers need to assess the size of the task, know how to listen to the market, and be aware of opportunities to republish existing assets.
